THE Commonwealth Bank's rivals are bleeding millions of dollars a day while they refrain from following Australia's biggest lender in jacking up mortgage rates, analysts say.
Westpac, ANZ and National Australia Bank are likely to have taken a hit of at least $20 million by sitting on their hands since the Reserve Bank lifted the official cash rate on Melbourne Cup Day.
Industry experts say the three banks are likely to be paying several million dollars more every day for their funding after the Reserve lifted the official cash rate 0.25 percentage points.
The banks' reluctance to act is widely interpreted as a sign that they want to follow the Commonwealth Bank in lifting mortgage rates beyond the Reserve's increase.
But the rabid public reaction to the Commonwealth Bank's decision is believed to have executives on edge, with each bank waiting for another to move in an evolving "Mexican stand-off".
